Second Chance: when circular economy enters prison

The circular economy stops at no barrier, not even those of a penitentiary institution. With the Second Chance project, Regusto, together with the City of Milan, has created an initiative that combines environmental sustainability, social inclusion and urban regeneration, bringing the value of recovery inside Milan’s prisons.

Regusto, which has always been committed to combating waste and promoting a sustainable and traceable economic model, is the promoter and coordinator of the project, which came to life thanks to the synergy with the Municipality of Milan, AMSA (A2A Group), the Lombardy Prisons Management, social cooperatives and other entities sensitive to positive impact.

Through its ESG platform based on blockchain technology, Regusto has provided tools for tracking, reporting and valuing the impact generated, ensuring transparency at every stage of the project: from material recovery to measuring environmental, economic and social benefits.

Regeneration of materials, reactivation of people

Second Chance transforms objects and furniture discarded by companies and public administrations into new resources, thanks to the direct intervention of inmates at the San Vittore, Opera and Bollate prisons. Materials, which would otherwise be destined for disposal, are redeveloped in workshops set up inside the institutions, where inmates receive technical training and professional support.

In the first months alone, more than 43 tons of materials have already been recovered, avoiding emissions, reducing waste and, above all, offering a second chance to those serving a sentence, creating the basis for more concrete social and labor reintegration.

An integrated model of positive impact

Second Chance embodies Regusto‘s vision: to generate value from waste. The initiative integrates the circular economy approach with the restorative justice approach, demonstrating that sustainability and inclusion can-and must-go hand in hand.

Thanks to the Regusto platform, the entire flow of activities is tracked and measurable, enabling the companies involved to integrate the data into their sustainability report and citizens to touch the concrete benefits of a more just economy.
