Together in the fight against food waste: Rovagnati

More than 360 food and non-food companies and over 400 non-profits are part of our network to prevent and reduce food waste. Our donation management portal leverages blockchain technology to provide transparency and traceability in managing the flow of money and goods.

There are many virtuous cases we can recount, today it is the turn of Rovagnati, a leader among Italian cured meat companies and recognized worldwide, present in more than 20 countries, with a turnover of 309.4 million euros, about 1,200 workers and 3 breeding plants.

The uniqueness and excellence of quality, pursued by performing careful and rigorous meat selection and through controls throughout the supply chain, contribute to the achievement of their main goal: to protect the final consumer.

In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), Rovagnati has embarked on a path of social responsibility and launched in 2017 its Corporate Social Responsibility program “Rovagnati Responsible Quality“. RQR is the ambitious project through which the company champions sustainable development by placing quality, people and the environment at the heart of what it has always done.

RQR - Rovagnati Quality Responsible

Aware of the importance of the fight against food waste, Rovagnati has committed itself to a series of initiatives aimed at supporting the territories and communities in which it operates every day: from food donations to partnerships with third sector organizations.

We interviewed Gabriele Rusconi, Managing Director and Board Member of Rovagnati, and asked him what prompted them to espouse our philosophy and what results have been achieved with us.

1) Why did you decide to espouse Regusto’s philosophy and technology?

Rovagnati has long stood by the neediest communities through concrete actions such as donations of its surpluses. The company has always strived to do so, in the knowledge that donating, in addition to being of fundamental help to thousands of people, makes it possible to make a concrete contribution to the fight against food waste, a crucial issue for our industry.
We espoused Regusto’s philosophy at the end of 2021 because we recognized ourselves first and foremost in its commitment and mission. Determined to reinforce our Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, we identified concrete support for people as one of the pillars of Rovagnati’s sustainable path.
Today we donate through Regusto because the transparency and traceability offered by blockchain technology perfectly responds to three key objectives of the company: to remain faithful to our value DNA, to invest in technological innovation, and to strengthen the network of support and relationships with entities and communities that need us.

2) What are the benefits found for the company? What results have been achieved and in how long?

The process of donating surplus food was already consolidated within Rovagnati thanks to the collaboration of functions and departments active in this sense, from Production to Planning.
By building a presence on Regusto we have, however, added a further piece to this flow. First and foremost because we have further involved the associations with which we collaborate-such as Banco Alimentare and Pane Quotidiano-inviting them to network through digital as well, but above all because we have activated a new flow of donations that ends with uploading to the platform and is therefore totally secure, immediately traceable and convertible into sustainability indices, with reports that can be downloaded at any time.
In 2021 Rovagnati donated a total of 15.4 tons of products, and from January 2022 to date alone we have distributed more than 6 tons, which is equivalent to more than 11,000 meals.

3) What are the benefits found for the environment? What results have been achieved and in how long?

We believe that one of the main advantages of Regusto is just that: the translatability of actions we have always taken into measurable indices of environmental commitment. In the first four months of the year alone, thanks to donations tracked on Regusto, we saved 1,120 kg ofCO2.
The availability of data like this is invaluable in our current strategic plan because it motivates us to make sustainability a key element of development, setting goals and equipping ourselves with tools to pursue them. It has enabled us to value donations in their most systemic value, that is, as an element that is entirely synergistic with other actions we are undertaking in the areas of ecological, economic and social sustainability.
